Teaching materials?

I will be going to Korea very soon to teach English for a year.
I admit that I have only minimal experience, and I am looking for
some materials to purchase on this side to take with me.

Does anyone with a bit more experience have any suggestions?

TIA,

Eric

I NEED A WORD!

Imagine you’re pouring pancake batter into a hot pan.  What single word
describes the "action" of the batter?  (A physics-oriented description would
be that it "flows isotropically over the allowed surface.")

Ditto a pouring of paint over a globe, as in the old Sherwin-Williams ad (this
obviously adding a third dimension to the covered surface).

It spreads evenly, flows equidistantly and uniformly from the center, and it
covers or envelops the pertinent surface.

If you have an idea, pls email me at cl…@informix.com

Software available?

Does anyone know of any shareware/pd programs available for either
PCs or unix platforms that can act as any of the following:

1) a robust thesaurus,
2) a dictionary, or
3) a grammar checker (perhaps with readability statistics).

If someone can list ftp sites or filenames that can be tracked down
with archie, that would be great.

Thanks for your help!

Teaching ESL in Japan?

I’ve been teaching ESL for 8 years at a university in Taiwan.
I’ve been thinking about getting a job in Japan & moving
there.  Before I go to the trouble of sending out resumes
& so on, I need to know the salary range I could expect in
Japan (college or university only).

Also, I’ve heard that in Japan, university instructors are
expected to be available and/or on campus for many non-teaching
hours.  Can someone fill me in on this?

CV in brief:

M.A. Asian Studies, UC Santa Barbara, 1978
Taiwan Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate
                  for University-level instructor
                  (subject area is unspecified)
8 years experience full-time ESL instructor
Speak, read, & write Chinese (could teach beginning level)

Any info/advice appreciated.
