Writing School

Does anyone have any dealings with The Writing School (sometimes called
the Writer’s Club) of Redhill, in surrey, England?  Becasue I have
reason to beleive that they’ve just gone out of business owing a lot of
people money…both students and teachers.   If you were thinking of
registering for a course with them, DON’T.  As of yesterday their phone
line is cut off and there is no reply at their offices to personal
callers!

Hypertext

I’m interested in Hypertext (not necessarily HTML) as a style,
medium or form of information presentation to learners or retrievers
of information, stored on computers.
Does anybody know about successful use of Hypertext in teaching
and/or museum environments? I’m interested in materials, e.g.
CD-ROMs, as well as findings from studies in psychology,
linguistics, literature and humanities in general.
Thanks for suggestions and contributions, Matthias R. Hold

My Name is Bond, James Bond

One of the things second-language (or non-native) learners of English
find difficulty when using English in every day life is introducing
people in different social settings.   This is often one of the common
things not taught in English textbooks.

Let’s stay on the simpler aspect of the art of introduction in English,
just introducing oneself.

We have the famour quote from 007 also know as James Bond.  "My name is
Bond, James Bond."

This seems a good clear way of introducing oneself.   My first question
is how common is this practiced ?

Most of the time I do hear people introducing themselves just by giving
their personal (or first) name, even not in informal settings, which
means I sometimes have to ask later on, perhaps indirectly, for their
family (or last) name.

They sometimes in more formal situations give their full name, which is
difficult to catch if they do not have common first name like James.

I’m not sure if native English speakers also, and in what situation,
would introduce themselves just by their last name.
